I have always loved reading. My mother used to read stories to me and my siblings and they always captivated me. I still love to read and am always reading something. This page is about what I am reading. I invite you to tell me about what you are reading as well.

Just finished reading Echos by Danielle Steele. This is the first Steele book I have read in years. I read a couple of her earlier books and wasn’t that impressed. This one sounded really good. It is starts out during WWI with a couple who marry against both of their parents wishes because she (Beatta) is Jewish and he is Catholic. They are both disowned by their families. The plot thickens as they move to Germany after the war is over with their two young daughters. In the early days of WWII you know that the Jewish family that has disowned Beatta is in danger but no one know about Beatta’s background because they wrote her off has dead and she is now Catholic.
The story is really interesting up to this point and I was really interested in what happens to the family and what happens to the Beatta and her two daughters. It then takes a turn and focuses solely on one of the daughters and kind of goes downhill from there. It is almost like Steele was writing a good book and then didn’t know how to finish it so she started writing another book at the end that just doesn’t finish well. You never really find out what happened to a lot of the characters and the one daughter’s story is kind of crazy. First she is a nun, then she is having an affair then she will be a nun again then not, and, all of this time she is portrayed as a very devout nun. Kind of confusing. I thought this book had the potential to be really good, but in the end, it just wasn’t.

Been reading as much as I can in my “spare time.” Finished all of the Sophie Kinsella books that were available at the library. They were easy and interesting reads. Would have been better is she had cleaned up the language a little bit. This is definitely in the “chic lit” catagory of books.
Started a series by Rhett MacPherson. These are cozy mysteries with a genealogist as the main character. Easy and interesting, however, I would have liked it better if the main character were a little more like-able. I found her a little whiny at times. I would read more from the library but probably not purchase these books.
The best books I have read lately were by Kate Morton. The Secret Garden and The House at Riverton. Both of these books were very interesting and stayed with you when you were finished.
In The Secret Garden, a little girl is left alone aboard a ship from England bound for Australia. She is taken in be a family and the story is about her search for why she was left and then the search is taken up by her granddaughter after her death. Fascinating story.
In The House at Riverton, an elderly lady remembers her life that started out as a maid at the house at Riverton in the early 1900’s in England. The story is set between the two World Wars. The story of an aristocratic family, a mysterious death, and a vanishing way of life is told in flashback by a woman who witnessed it all and kept secrets for more than 50 years.

Just finished Return to Sullivan’s Islands last night. I must say, I liked the first one better. This one just didn’t really come together that well. The part involving Beth’s aunts left me kind of scratching my head wondering where that came from. Don’t want to give anything away, but this one was kind of different.

I’ve been busy, busy this summer. Some of my favorite reads for the summer include The Defector by Daniel Silva. This is the latest in the Gabriel Allon series. If you like fast paced, spy thrillers, you will love Daniel Silva.
Also on my list this summer is Return to Sullivan’s Island by Dorothea Benton Frank. This is a sequel to her earlier book Sullivan’s Island.
Next on to Greedy Bones by Carolyn Haines. This is the latest in her “bones” series that are light, cozy mysteries set in the mythical Zinnia, Mississippi.

I see I didn’t update here on the last book. Finally got through Dorothea Benton Frank’s Full of Grace. Wasn’t my favorite. I usually like her books better. The main character in this book is a travel agent and her trips (that had nothing to do with the main story) were kind of distracting.
Oh well, on to the next book – Driving Lessons by Curtiss Ann Matlock.

I’m still reading Dorothea Benton Frank’s Full of Grace. It has really taken me a while to get in to this one. The main character is taking trips that are kind of distracting to me at this point. I’ll let you know what I think when I’m through.

I saw that a friend of mine is starting Ann George’s Southern Sister Sister Series. I’m sure she will really enjoy these cozy mysteries with 2 crazy and hilarious sisters.
Ellen B. at The Happy Wonderer tells me she is reading Anne of Green Gables and is on book 5. Love Anne of Green Gables and I agree with Ellen B. that they are a really pleasant read.

Starting Dorothea Benton Frank’s Full of Grace today. I’ve read her past books and enjoyed them. Frank’s books generally deal with a flawed woman who evolves through her experiences. The books are set in South Carolina’s low country.

I just finished reading Miss Julia Delivers the Goods by Ann B. Ross. This is the latest in her series about Miss Julia. The Miss Julia books are fun and easy reads surrounded by Miss Julia herself. I would definitely recommend the Miss Julia series!
